Discovering the Message
Public Group active 3 weeks, 3 days agoThe first stage in sermon preparation is the discovery of the message. Through exegesis of both text and context, the preacher discerns what it is that God wants said to these people, through this text, at this time. This space allows members opportunity to discuss issues in message discovery, sharing ideas, raising questions, and offering examples. Don’t forget to check the preaching.org “classroom” for further insight on this theme.

Discovering the Message: 3 months, 2 weeks agoI was called to preach 2 years ago this fall. Have had the opportunity about 5 times. I find that so far my messages have come from lessons I taught as a youth leader. Which I guess there is nothing wrong with that. I’m very new at this and I am in a church that basically “turns you loose”. So far everyone says I’m doing a great job, the first…[Read more]

Discovering the Message: 8 months, 3 weeks agoI was given the Theme, ”Glorifying God Brings Abundant Blessings”…
I think the Lord led me to choose Matt. 5: 13-16 as the Text.
The heart of the message seems to be, ”Our personal holiness (our act of Glorifying God) brings opportunities for the salvation of others (the blessing received).” -

Discovering the Message: 10 months, 3 weeks agoJust started working my way through James – first three weeks have been on James 1:1-12. I’ve been really impacted with a study of the word doulos translated as slave (one born into slavery) rather than servant or bond servant, neither of which seem to contain teh full force of the word. A huge difference in our world view even between born into…[Read more]

Discovering the Message: 10 months, 4 weeks agoI am convinced that good preaching will endeavor to stay as close to the author’s intent as possible in terms of theology and purpose within its canonical function. Exegesis is not enough, if the meaning of the text is the only framework, as meaning is applied within a given historical situation and theological framework.

I am not very experienced either, but I have found it useful to write out a full manuscript as I meditate on the text. From this manuscript I begin to draw out an outline, which is then what I use when I preach. This gives me the freedom to be creative while preaching, but at the same time I have an outline to keep me on track.
As for…[Read more]
