I am not very experienced either, but I have found it useful to write out a full manuscript as I meditate on the text. From this manuscript I begin to draw out an outline, which is then what I use when I preach. This gives me the freedom to be creative while preaching, but at the same time I have an outline to keep me on track.

I have two quick comments/suggestions. Read Preachers and Preaching by Martyn LLoyd Jones…I think this may confirm in your heart whether or not you are really called to preach. I must say, this work by Dr. Jones has been very influential to me personally.

  Thank you for the book suggestions. I have no doubt in my heart about the calling, and I do research and write out everything. I was told this is a bad habit, because of the temptation of reading a piece of paper word for word. But its how my mind works.     Anne, God’s Word is very clear regarding the qualifications of Pastors (also called Elders, Bishop, Overseer.)
    My suggestion to you is to prayerfully study in depth those scriptures related to these qualificaitons. Start with these: 1 Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1:5-9, 1 Peter 5:1-3, 2 Timothy 2:2.

I was given the Theme, ”Glorifying God Brings Abundant Blessings”…
I think the Lord led me to choose Matt. 5: 13-16 as the Text.
The heart of the message seems to be, ”Our personal holiness (our act of Glorifying God) brings opportunities for the salvation of others (the blessing received).”

I am convinced that good preaching will endeavor to stay as close to the author’s intent as possible in terms of theology and purpose within its canonical function. Exegesis is not enough, if the meaning of the text is the only framework, as meaning is applied within a given historical situation and theological framework.
