What specifically are you asking about the exegetical process?

what are the specific steps in the exegetical process and what are some good books on the process?

That’s a big question. I’ve dealt with it to some degree in my book, Choosing to Preach. I like to think of exegesis in terms of several kinds of analyses…
*literary analysis (understanding the text in terms of its literary style – letter, poem, teaching…)
*grammatical analysis (looking at the text in terms of its physical structure)
*verbal analysis (what do the terms mean in context)
*historical analysis (where is the text placed in time and history)
*theological analysis (what part does this text in salvation history – what does it say about God)
My favorite book on the subject is Walter Kaiser’s "Toward an Exegetical Theology" which you can find described in the review section of preaching.org.
