Byron Gardiner posted an update Hello members of preaching.org. After attending Kent's first part of the Homelitics course I was asked to speak (preach I guess at a church). This is the outline I used hoping to follow Kent's course instructions. Although the methodology made sense to me, I found it more difficult than I thought to fill in the template. I think there is quite a bit of creativity involved and I don't always land strongly in that category. I'm thinking it probably also takes some practice to get good at it, as is the case in most of life's challenges/opportunuties. I'm not even sure if one can make sense of this, but if you can and have a suggestion or two or more, I would welcome it. Here is the outline and maybe a bit more:
Title: Is your path well lit ?
Theme: God wants to light our path in life through His word
Text: Psalm 119:101-107
Imagery: Lighting/illumination/lamps

Light represents the word of God

Engagement – What is the story? We know light helps us find our way.

Story of Landon (grandson) when he is 2. He discovers that a flashlight can help him discover what he is looking for. He discovered he could use it to look inside things and look under things to find what he was looking for. Or, if you turn the lights he would walk around shining the light knowing that he had something valuable. He is 3 now and is still fascinated by the idea that this light can help him. He gets it that light helps him.

When I was a teenager and part of the boy’s brigade at our church, we often went camping in northeastern Manitoba. Drive for a couple hours, then hiked for 2-3 hours to get to a little known lake at the time that few people even knew existed. In the early years of doing this camping trip you would not see another person, other than from our group. Our destination was a large point that reached out into the lake which is where we set up camp. Some set up camp on the north side of the point while others set up on the south side. There was about 200 meters between the two camps. During the day you could find your way back and forth quite easily amongst the little streams, fallen trees, rocks, heavy brush, but at night we quickly realized to make our way we needed a light – something that would show us how to get from one side of the point to the other. If you didn’t have a light you would fall, stumble, get caught up, and sometimes get lost. We got it that we needed light to find our way.

Information – What is the point: God’s word is a lamp for our lives – it can, it should light our way through our journey in life.

Book of the Bible with the most chapters and longest chapter.
The song book, the hymn book, the praise book. This is an ancient songbook of God’s people.

It is a chapter of thought and prayers about the laws of God – God’s word. There are more verses before this passage and after that we could have read but these will serve us well
Psalm 119:101-107
101 I have restrained my feet from every evil way, That I may keep Thy word.
•	Why would the songwriter restrain their feet
•	Saw the value, held in high regard
•	Feet wanted to go where they shouldn’t but he restrained them
102 I have not turned aside from Thine ordinances, For Thou Thyself hast taught me.
•	Ordinances – statutes, precepts, a maxim – a rule of conduct, a statement of truth – high importance
•	Thou thyself – God you taught – these words of yours – it is you yourself teaching me. It is God almightly. It is the creator of all that exists. And has revealed Himself in His word
103 How sweet are Thy words to my taste! Yes, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
•	Eugene Peterson in The Message says it this way. Your words are so choice, so tasty; I prefer them to the best home cooking. Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners.
104 From Thy precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way.
•	From your precepts – statements of truth I learn something – I come to an understanding and it has such an impart this understanding that false ways, even false truth
105 Thy word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path.
•	Key verse
•	Like the light that my grandson used to find valuable things so too the word of God can shine a path before us
•	I get 2 thoughts here – Thy word is a lamp to my feet – it shines right around when I’m in the midst of life and it also can shine on my path ahead of me
106 I have sworn, and I confirm it, That I will keep Thy righteous ordinances.
•	I am convinced, I see the value of your word
107 I am exceedingly afflicted; Revive me, O Lord, according to Thy word.
•	This is the tough part – I valued your word as light to my path, I’ve restrained myself at times, your word is choice to me – tasty, I am convinced of it, I’ve hated false truth. This is your word God I acknowledge it yet I have found trouble in my life
•	Your word revives me – it brings me back to life, it brings me back to a fresh lively condition

Read straight through now 101 to 107

Exposition – What is the problem: I/We don’t always recognize this light offered to us, or we diminished its importance.

1. Maybe we think God’s word was a light for these Ancient people – but it doesn’t really fit into todays world
•	Psalm 119:160

2. Maybe life gets in the way – there is such a busyness that before I know it the day is over, which turns into a week and maybe longer and God’s word doesn’t even get a chance to be a lamp to your feet
•	Psalm 1:2,3
•	I have been there. I’ve experienced a dry season – God’s word hidden in my heart

3. Maybe we find other things that we think can be a lamp to our feet, or a light to our path – the latest fads, and the latest how to book- even in Christian book stores. God’s word as a lamp to our feet and a light to our path can stand alone.

4. Maybe we get the light we are shown the way, but we don’t like it. That’s not for me

Inspiration – What is the difference, What is the desired outcome: Let’s join together to place God’s word as top priority in our lives. Let’s treasure it. Let’s make it the light of our path

Use the big 150 year old Bible illustration as a family treasure, but the real treasure is this is the lamp unto my feet.
This lamp to our feet, this light to our path says
1. You should love your neighbour as yourself
2. You should forgive your brother 7 times – no 70 times 7. Even that worker that has been a thorn in my side for so long
3. Feed the hungry and the thirsty
4. God loves us – so much that he gave Son Jesus to take the…..
5. We need a Savior- we need Jesus in our lives – scarlet thread of redemption winds throughout his word from Genesis to revelation.
Personal commitment today?

I read a lot of books on preaching and it has become rare to find one that really challenges my thinking. Suffice it to say, I'll be assigning this one to all my students for the next few years. This book deserves your close consideration.
